Which is Better for Outdoor Flooring: Tiles or WPC Decking?

As I write today’s article, I feel the need to address this topic directly, especially since it’s a common question I receive from my followers: “Is it better to use tiles or WPC decking for outdoor flooring?” This topic is something I’ve covered in past articles and frequently emphasize during my live broadcasts. So today, I want to fully clarify this issue.

Let’s get straight to the point. I strongly advise against using tiles for your garden or even on your terrace, despite what some vendors may claim about their so-called “antique, non-slip tiles” being suitable for outdoor use. Think about it logically: if these tiles were truly as great as they say, then why don’t we see them used in city landscaping projects or public parks? There’s a reason why tiles are avoided in these areas.

Why Not Use Tiles?

The first and most critical issue is safety—tiles become extremely slippery when it rains or during freezing winter conditions. Secondly, there’s the problem of fading. Most tiles are designed for indoor use, so when exposed to outdoor conditions over time, they are prone to fading and even cracking. I’m not trying to scare you; this is based on my 23 years of experience in landscape design and construction. You don’t have to take my word for it, but if you choose to test it yourself, you’ll see what I mean.

Why Choose WPC Decking?

On the other hand, I highly recommend WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) decking. With the continuous advancement in manufacturing technology, WPC decking now closely mimics the natural look of wood while offering superior durability. It is resistant to wear, dirt, and UV rays, making it ideal for outdoor use. I’ve personally used WPC decking on many of my own projects.

Here’s a tip: when installing WPC decking, make sure to use aluminum alloy joists as the base. This will significantly extend the lifespan of your decking.
